Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud, who was praised for his dealings with local and national media during the previous season, has been selected as the 2024 Good Guy Award winner by the Professional Football Writers of America (PFWA).

Stroud, the 20th Good Guy Award winner, is the first member of the Texans franchise to win the award.

Other finalists for the Good Guy Award were Cleveland Browns guard Joel Bitonio, Buffalo Bills tackle Dion Dawkins, Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Brandon Graham and Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.

The Good Guy Award is given to an NFL player for his qualities and professional style in helping pro football writers do their jobs. The award has been presented annually by the PFWA since 2005.

Stroud, the second overall selection in the 2023 NFL Draft by Houston, made an immediate impact on the field with his play, in the locker room with reporters covering the Texans daily and in the greater Houston community.

“Stroud is the Good Guy Award winner because of his professionalism and openness with both the national and local media. He is always available during the week and after games, win or lose. He understands the media has a job to do and answers each question thoroughly,” said PFWA Houston chapter co-vice president Jonathan Alexander, who covers the Texans for the Houston Chronicle. “He is also active in the Houston community without seeking attention, recently volunteering to remove trees and clean up debris from yards in underserved communities after a storm left many residents without power for several days.”

“First and foremost, I want to give all glory and praise to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It’s a blessing to be recognized as the PFWA Good Guy Award winner, and it stands out to me because it’s more of an award that embodies someone’s character rather than the stats they compile on the field, Stroud said. “I appreciate the job the media has and thank them for choosing me as someone who is deserving of this honor. A special shoutout to the other very deserving players who were nominated and those that won before me.”

The 2023 PFWA NFL Rookie of the Year and Offensive Rookie of the Year, Stroud started all 15 games he appeared in, and he finished the regular season completing 319 of 499 passes for 4,108 yards, 23 touchdowns and only five interceptions while posting a passer rating of 100.8. The 4,108 yards were third most by a rookie quarterback in NFL history, and his TD-interception ratio of 4.6 led the league – the youngest player to pace the league in that category. Stroud also started the season with 191 consecutive passes without an interception – an NFL mark to start a career.

Stroud was the 2023 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Month twice in September and November, the AFC Offensive Player of the Month for November, and he was selected as the AFC Offensive Player of the Week twice (Weeks 9 and 18).

ABOUT THE PFWA: In its 61st season in 2024, the Professional Football Writers of America (PFWA) is the official voice of pro football writers, promoting and fighting for access to NFL personnel to best serve the public. The PFWA is made up of accredited writers who cover the NFL and the 32 teams daily. Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News is the PFWA president for the 2023-24 seasons and the organization’s 31st president. Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post is the PFWA’s first vice-president, Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic is the second vice-president, Lindsay Jones of The Ringer is the advisor to the president and Mike Sando of The Athletic is the secretary-treasurer. At-large board members include Mike Jones of The Athletic, ESPN.com’s Jeff Legwold, Joe Reedy of the Associated Press and ProFootballTalk.com’s Charean Williams. Follow the PFWA at ProFootballWriters.org and on Twitter at @PFWAwriters.

GOOD GUY AWARD WINNERS (To a NFL player for his qualities and professional style in helping the pro football writers do their job) Year indicates when award was presented for previous season: 2005 – Jerome Bettis (Pittsburgh Steelers); 2006 – Tiki Barber (New York Giants); 2007 – LaDainian Tomlinson (San Diego Chargers); 2008 – Brett Favre (Green Bay Packers); 2009 – Kurt Warner (Arizona Cardinals); 2010 – Drew Brees (New Orleans Saints); 2011 – Aaron Rodgers (Green Bay Packers); 2012 – Tim Tebow (Denver Broncos); 2013 – Tony Gonzalez (Atlanta Falcons); 2014 – Russell Wilson (Seattle Seahawks); 2015 – Richard Sherman (Seattle Seahawks); 2016 – Thomas Davis (Carolina Panthers); 2017 – Larry Fitzgerald (Arizona Cardinals); 2018 – Chris Long (Philadelphia Eagles); 2019 – Chris Long (Philadelphia Eagles); 2020 – Eli Manning (New York Giants); 2021 – Philip Rivers (Indianapolis Colts); 2022 – Cameron Heyward (Pittsburgh Steelers); 2023 – Jason Kelce (Philadelphia Eagles); 2024 – C.J.

Coming off a strong rookie year, STARRY®, a great-tasting soda bursting with lemon lime flavor that delivers the crisp, refreshing bite, is bringing a refreshing twist to basketball. The official soft drink of the NBA, WNBA, and NBA G League is teaming up with rapper and basketball fan Lil Durk to help fans unlock their on-the-court passion by bringing a different kind of basketball skills competition to college campuses with STARRY FIZZ FEST.

This spring, students across four HBCUs — Norfolk State University, Hampton University, Jackson State University and Morgan State University — will have a shot at more than $333,000 in scholarships and prizes, including a chance to secure an NIL deal traditionally reserved for student-athletes, giving a student a first-of-its-kind opportunity to become one of the new faces of STARRY. The winner will get an all-expenses paid trip to Kia NBA Tip-Off later this year. And like a true star with an NIL deal, their name, image and likeness will be featured on promotional materials for STARRY FIZZ FEST 2.0.

No stranger to holding his own in an arena, Lil Durk is showing students how any fan can have the skills to win and will be making a surprise campus appearance to check out the competition.

“Being competitive doesn’t just apply to sport, life itself is about hunger, drive and teamwork. This initiative is about rewarding students for their grind on and off the court, showing love and supporting our people while chasing their dreams,” Lil Durk said. For the stars off the court, STARRY is also partnering with the PepsiCo Foundation to unlock $80,000 in scholarships across the four universities. The PepsiCo Foundation will award $20,000 to one student at each university to go towards their education to help foster their long-term educational and professional growth. Eligible students can apply online.

“Our mission with STARRY FIZZ FEST is to bring the excitement to basketball fans that the brand is known for while rewarding HBCU students for their passion, amplifying their talent, and offering opportunities that positively impact these universities, their students and their communities,” Kent Montgomery, Senior Vice President, Industry Relations and Multicultural Development, PepsiCo said.

STARRY FIZZ FEST will tip off at Norfolk State University on March 29, followed by Hampton University on April 1, Jackson State University on April 20 and Morgan State University on April 26. Participating students will get the chance to play S-T-A-R-R-Y (a spin on the popular game of H-O-R-S-E), 3PT Knockout (a three-point shootout contest reflective of the STARRY NBA All-Star and HBCU Classic tailgate footprint), and Shaky Shot (inspired by the classic arcade game, with a moving backboard) to claim prizes like STARRY merch and gift cards. For the game of S-T-A-R-R-Y, students will have three minutes to earn six letters by successfully scoring specified shots around the court until a participant spells out S-T-A-R-R-Y where the fastest time on campus wins. One winner from each school will represent their campus at a final competition to showcase their skills and earn major bragging rights.

ARLINGTON – The United Football League (“UFL”) and Under Armour today announced an expanded partnership with the National Coalition of Minority Football Coaches (NCMFC), an organization dedicated to preparing, promoting, and producing minority coaches at all levels of football.

“We are proud to work with Under Armour and the NCMFC to expand our partnership for the 2024 season,” said Russ Brandon, president and CEO of the UFL. “The program is a tremendous growth opportunity for these coaches, and we are deeply committed to creating opportunities and providing unparalleled access to professional coaching at the highest level.”

After a successful pilot program with the XFL’s D.C. and San Antonio markets in 2023, the UFL and Under Armour will bring the program to all eight markets for the 2024 season. The program will include eight current high school coaches who have at least three years of experience. Additional factors in the selection process included the applicant’s proximity to UFL markets.

“We’re thrilled to partner with the UFL and NCMFC in our commitment to access and opportunity within sports. Under Armour is passionate about creating opportunities for minority football coaches of all levels to increase minority hires year over year, and increase engagement with the Coalition, ultimately bringing more diversity, equity, and inclusion to football,” said Sean Eggert, SVP of Global Sports Marketing at Under Armour. “With the expansion of this partnership, we will provide NCMFC coaching members in each of these markets a platform to continue to build on their craft, grow personally and professionally, and develop a network so they are in the best position to take the next step in their careers.”

Beginning Thursday, March 7, each coach will report to the UFL’s training camp hub in Arlington, Texas, allowing them to meet their respective teams and staff in person. At training camp, these coaches will take part in meetings and practices, assisting with their team’s needs.

During the 2024 UFL season, the selected coaches will attend all five home games in their respective markets, assisting on the sidelines and working with staff on key projects.

“The mission of the National Coalition of Minority Football Coaches centers around the professional development of minority football coaches, which is why we are excited to expand our partnership with Under Armour and the UFL,” said Mike Locksley, President and founder of NCMFC. “This unique opportunity for a minority fellowship with a professional UFL team will give our coaches the chance to gain invaluable experience as they seek to advance their careers. We know our coaches truly appreciate such a rare opportunity, which was apparent by the vast number of applications we received.”

THE 2024 HIGH SCHOOL COACHES SELECTED INCLUDE:

Arlington Renegades: Nkere “Scoop” Reed, Highland Park High School

As he heads into his 21st year of coaching football, basketball and track, Reed looks forward to continuing to learn on all levels and aspires to move to a professional level of coaching. In 2018, he participated in the Bill Walsh Fellowship, serving as a coaching intern with the Buffalo Bills.

Birmingham Stallions: Jason Winchell, Norcross High School

With a passion for player development and a commitment to excellence, Winchell’s impact on and off the field continues to inspire. He brings over a decade of coaching experience to the high school football field. Serving as the offensive play caller, his team boasted an average of 32 points per game, and under his guidance, the 2023 team clinched the regional championship. Additionally, he coached a first-team all-county running back and spearheaded a running back group that maintained zero turnovers. Winchell has also been instrumental in securing several Power 5 scholarship offers for his athletes.

D.C. Defenders: Eric Allie, Our Lady of Good Counsel High School

After 10 years of coaching youth football, Allie felt he needed a new challenge in his coaching career and decided to make the jump to coaching high school. In 2010, Allie was offered a position as the freshman RB coach at Our Lady of Good Counsel. After 6 years, Coach Allie was promoted to varsity RB coach where he coached former Lions RB Mo Ibrahim. Coach Allie has always channeled the skills he learned in the military into his coaching style. Leadership, preparation, and accountability are major pieces of his coaching philosophy. Last summer, Coach Allie participated in the NY Jets Bill Walsh Diversity Fellowship.

Houston Roughnecks: Yusef Johnson, Lutheran South Academy

Even during a 27-year career in space exploration, Johnson has always found time to coach football, the sport he loves, and provided so much to him. Currently, he’s the lead mission planner for the Artemis IV mission, which will deliver the I-HAB module to the Lunar Gateway space station, as well as perform a lunar landing mission. Johnson aspires to advance his coaching opportunities beyond the high school level.

Memphis Showboats: Rodney Saulsberry Sr., Whitehaven High School

Saulsberry has won several state championships as a head coach at his alma mater, Whitehaven High School. Under his leadership, he has led his team to a 185-53 record in 19 seasons, reestablishing the program as a playoff fixture. He has been named AFCA High School Coach of the Year and Influential Coach of the Year.

Michigan Panthers: Marcus Green, Cornerstone Lincoln-King High School

Green started the football program that he is currently coaching and strives to improve as a former D1 football player and first-time head coach. A promising D-Tackle, he was set to join the line at Penn State University until doctors discovered a benign pituitary brain tumor, which would cut his athletic career short. Still, Green pursued a career in sports, even if it meant using his skill set off the field. After receiving his bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism from Penn State, he worked at ESPN, ABC News and the former Chicago-based digital college sports network, Campus Insiders.

San Antonio Brahmas: Matthew Bullock, San Antonio Veterans Memorial

Bullock is a special education teacher at San Antonio Veterans Memorial, the head powerlifting coach, and assistant football coach working with inside linebackers and the defensive line. Like the high expectations Bullock sets forth in his student-athletes, he is always looking for opportunities to develop as a coach.

St. Louis Battlehawks: Kenneth Boyer, Christian Brothers College High School

Boyer moved back to St. Louis in anticipation of the birth of his first child, a baby girl in 2024, and took an assistant coaching position at Christian Brothers College High School. There, serving as assistant wide receivers/tight ends coach, his team carved their way to a third-straight Class 6 championship game appearance.
