Andscape’s Sean Hurd shares on the significance of Wilson’s signature shoe from Nike:

Excerpts from the press release:

“It’s been incredible working with Nike toward a dream of having my collection, and it really is an honor to take this next step and become a Nike signature athlete,” says Wilson. “From my logo to the look of the shoe and the pieces throughout the collection, we’ve worked to make sure every detail is perfectly tuned to my game and style.”

Wilson’s experience with Nike has been reflected throughout the design process, says Ben Nethongkome, the lead footwear designer for her collection. From the onset, he says, A’ja was quick to share her aesthetic and performance priorities for her signature shoe, and her collaborative spirit and infectious energy helped the design team bring her vision to life.

“The design process with Nike was really gratifying, and I didn’t realize how much goes into designing a shoe,” says Wilson. “My biggest asks were that the shoe was light and comfortable for all the hours I spend on the court, and that it also looks really good. It’s versatile, and I hope people will wear it when they’re hooping but also just when they’re walking around every day. It’s so exciting to be sharing my signature, a piece of me, with the world.”

Billionaire businessman and basketball legend Michael Jordan and mother Deloris Jordan have opened a third medical clinic in North Carolina. The Jordans attended the grand opening of the Novant Health Michael Jordan Family Medical Clinic in the Wilmington on Greenfield Street, which serves uninsured and underinsured residents. He has donated $10 million to Norvant Health for the effort to build two additional facilities.

According to a statement from Norvant Health, the facility will have 12 patient rooms where a primary care team and community health worker will be stationed to assist local patients.

“This is what this clinic is about,” Jordan said in his emotional opening remarks. “When families are not about to support, we’re there to support. If you don’t have any money, it doesn’t matter. We’re going to do whatever we can to support you. Because that’s what happened to me.” He continued, “We did it in Charlotte, and now we’re going to do it here in Wilmington. Which makes it even more special because this is home. This is where I came from. And, no matter how you see Michael Jordan, this is where I started. This is what I’m always going to be a part of.”

NBA All-Star Kevin Durant read the news report and called Michael and Deloris Jordan “two GOATS.”

“We are tremendously grateful to Michael Jordan for his philanthropic support of our efforts to close health equity gaps. The Novant Health Michael Jordan Family Medicine Clinics in Charlotte provided more than 9,000 patient visits last year and are delivering profound benefits in the community. We’re excited to expand this model in Wilmington, where the clinic team will provide life-changing care,” senior vice president of Novant Health Ann Caulkins said.

HOUSTON – The embers of black women in basketball have been smoldering for years, and now they’re on fire! Recent announcements of Candace Parker becoming the Women’s President at Reebok prove that what Eddie Murphy’s Uncle Ray said at the barbeque is true: “Now, that’s a fire!” The ladies are a red-hot financial windfall for brands and their customers.

Brands are strategically aligning themselves with women’s basketball, recognizing the sport’s potential in today’s marketplace. The partnerships forged by influential women in basketball, such as Candace Parker, A’ja Wilson, and Angel Reese, are clear indicators of how corporations can significantly enhance their brand exposure, position, profits, and influence by investing in women’s sports.

CANDACE PARKER AND ADIDAS

She joins her TNT cohort, Shaquille O’Neal at Reebok, as another president of a sports apparel maker. Her story is an inspiration to all aspiring athletes and business leaders.

“Stepping into this new leadership role is a deeply personal next step in my journey with adidas,” Candace Parker, President of adidas Women’s Basketball, said about her new position. “From high school to college to playing pro to now, this appointment by adidas symbolizes a shared commitment to making impactful change and setting new benchmarks for the future of women’s sports. Clark is arguably one of the hottest names in sports. As a black league owner, his offer is a significant power move to include Clark in the BIG3.

Cube posted his response via social media:

“We intended the offer to remain private while Caitlin Clark plays for the championship. But I won’t deny what’s now already out there: BIG3 made a historic offer to Caitlin Clark. Why wouldn’t we? Caitlin is a generational athlete who can achieve tremendous success in the BIG3.

America’s women athletes should not be forced to spend their off seasons playing in often dismal and dubious foreign countries just to make ends meet.

And they should have more than just one professional option in the US at a time when American pro sports leagues are being infiltrated by autocratic, anti-women regimes such as Qatar. Our pathbreaking offer to Caitlin Clark demonstrates that BIG3 now offers another choice for athletes.”

The deal from BIG3 would still allow Clark to play in the WNBA and give her the option to earn more money in his league.

The media mogul and entrepreneur was honored by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame by bestowing the “Ice Cube Impact Award” in his name.

Clark, 22, is the NCAA Division I all-time scoring leader across women’s and men’s programs. She was the AP Player of the Year in 2023, and her Iowa Hawkeyes team made the 2024 NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship’s Sweet 16. The scoring phenomenon has already cashed in millions on NIL deals and is projected to reap a financial bonanza in endorsements once she concludes amateur basketball.

As an entrepreneur, Ice Cube co-founded the BIG3 basketball league with noted entertainment businessman Jeff Kwatinetz in 2017. The league has attracted 3-on-3 basketball athletes with international and NBA experience.

O’Shea Jackson Sr, aka Ice Cube, was a founding member of the legendary rap group N.W.A. with famous artists and producers Eazy-E (Eric Wright) and Dr. Dre (Andre Young). Later, he branched off into acting in John Singleton’s ‘Boyz N The Hood’ and wrote, directed, and acted in the highly successful Friday movies.

The inaugural Ice Cube Impact Award is a groundbreaking collaboration between the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and the BIG3 basketball league visionary Ice Cube.

“I have had a deep love for basketball since my early years,” Ice Cube said. “When I embarked on the BIG3 journey, I never anticipated it would culminate to the level of having an award from the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame named after me. I am genuinely elated and honored.”

The award aims to recognize Ice Cube’s remarkable contributions to basketball, unparalleled passion for the game, steadfast commitment to fostering dialogues on inclusivity, equal opportunity, and racial and social justice, and significant contributions to education and community development initiatives.

“The Hall of Fame honors those whose contributions have had a significant impact on the sport at every level,” John Doleva, President and CEO of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, on creating an award on Ice Cube’s behalf. “The creation of the Ice Cube Impact Award further advances our foundational mission to preserve and promote the game of basketball and to be a force for positive change in the world. Ice Cube has created opportunities in basketball, music, and entertainment and continues to inspire millions through his efforts. This new exhibit and the annual trophy will honor both Ice Cube and the community leaders who use James Naismith’s ideals to build better communities.”

About Ice Cube

Ice Cube, a legendary figure in the world of music and entertainment, has proven time and time again that his talents and passions extend far beyond the realm of music and movies. While initially gaining fame as a groundbreaking rap group N.W.A. member, Ice Cube has since carved out a multifaceted career that spans acting, directing, producing, and even sports ownership. Following N.W.A., Ice Cube pursued a successful solo music career. He later established himself as a prominent figure in the entertainment industry through his acting roles and contributions to filmmaking, starring in numerous films such as “Boyz n the Hood,” “Friday,” and “Barbershop.” In 2017, he co-founded the BIG3, which aimed to bring an exciting 3-on-3 basketball league featuring former NBA stars and other professional players to fans.
