Billionaire businessman and basketball legend Michael Jordan and mother Deloris Jordan have opened a third medical clinic in North Carolina. The Jordans attended the grand opening of the Novant Health Michael Jordan Family Medical Clinic in the Wilmington on Greenfield Street, which serves uninsured and underinsured residents. He has donated $10 million to Norvant Health for the effort to build two additional facilities.

According to a statement from Norvant Health, the facility will have 12 patient rooms where a primary care team and community health worker will be stationed to assist local patients.

“This is what this clinic is about,” Jordan said in his emotional opening remarks. “When families are not about to support, we’re there to support. If you don’t have any money, it doesn’t matter. We’re going to do whatever we can to support you. Because that’s what happened to me.” He continued, “We did it in Charlotte, and now we’re going to do it here in Wilmington. Which makes it even more special because this is home. This is where I came from. And, no matter how you see Michael Jordan, this is where I started. This is what I’m always going to be a part of.”

NBA All-Star Kevin Durant read the news report and called Michael and Deloris Jordan “two GOATS.”

“We are tremendously grateful to Michael Jordan for his philanthropic support of our efforts to close health equity gaps. The Novant Health Michael Jordan Family Medicine Clinics in Charlotte provided more than 9,000 patient visits last year and are delivering profound benefits in the community. We’re excited to expand this model in Wilmington, where the clinic team will provide life-changing care,” senior vice president of Novant Health Ann Caulkins said.

HOUSTON – The 3rd annual HBCU All-Star Game will tip off in Phoenix at 4:00 PM ET inside Global Credit Union Arena on the campus of Grand Canyon University. HBCU basketball players will receive significant national exposure as millions of viewers tune in to watch them perform on CBS.

Founder Travis Williams will introduce 24 of the best and brightest HBCU basketball all-stars who hope to take their careers to the next level. Today’s game aims to help advance their career options as professionals in the NBA, G League, Europe, or China.

“This is history in the making once again to host the first-ever HBCU All-Star Game in the Valley of the Sun and in a part of the country where HBCUs do not exist,” said Williams. “As always, I am just being obedient to this God-driven vision that was founded in 2019, and it has been a long journey and dream come true to get to this point in year #3. We will continue honoring and celebrating the rich history, tradition, and contributions of HBCUs to the sport of college basketball. I am truly excited in year #3 with our founding partner Aflac and expect to put on another great event in Phoenix. This year, Aflac will be returning as the official sponsor of the HBCU All-Star game.”

“At Aflac, we have a long history of recognizing and supporting historically black colleges and universities. The HBCU All-Star Game is a wonderful expression of the HBCU experience and does a tremendous job in shining the spotlight on these highly talented players,” said Garth Knutson, Chief Marketing Officer of Aflac. “We know that there continues to be a gap in recognizing and celebrating the talent these students offer, and we are excited to deepen once again our commitment to closing this gap for HBCU students, on and off the court, as an official sponsor of the HBCU All-Star basketball game.”

After leading Grambling to a historic season, Donte Jackson became the first coach to win the Jobe Award twice, having previously won the award in 2018.

Not only did Jackson lead Grambling to its first-ever NCAA tournament appearance, but his team capitalized once they got there. The Tigers rallied from a 14-point second-half deficit to defeat Montana State in overtime in their First Four matchup.

Grambling won the SWAC regular season championship for the second consecutive season, finishing with a 24-9 record and defeated nemesis Texas Southern in the SWAC conference tournament title game.

Jackson has a 120-102 record in seven seasons at Grambling, including an 80-42 mark in SWAC games.

“Donte Jackson has rewritten the narrative about Grambling basketball in the Division I era,” Angela Lento, Vice President of CollegeInsider.com said. Prior to his arrival, the program struggled for decades, finishing above .500 in conference play just eight times in 40 years. He has taken Grambling from second-division status to the top of the SWAC. Donte Jackson is the best coach in Grambling’s Division I history.”

The Ben Jobe Award is named in honor of one of the most iconic coaches in the history of basketball at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. (HBCUs). He is best known as the head coach of Southern University, a position he held for 12 seasons. He was also head coach at Alabama A&M, Alabama State, Talladega, Tuskegee, and South Carolina State.

His record at Southern was 209-141, including four NCAA Tournament appearances. He coached the Jaguars to one NIT appearance, five SIAC championships, 11 SWAC titles, and two NAIA Tournament Championships. Perhaps his most memorable moment as a coach was
leading No. 15 seed Southern to a 93-78 win over No. 2 Georgia Tech in the first round of the 1993 NCAA Tournament. It stands as one of the great upsets in the event’s history.

Coach Jobe passed away on March 10, 2017.

The recipient of the annual award is determined by a 10-member voting committee, which consists of current and former head coaches and two senior staff members of Collegeinsider.com.

CBS Sports is reporting solid numbers for the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. According to the CBS Sports PR department, the Sweet 16 games “averaged 10.3 million viewers across CBS, TBS, and truTV,” which is a 5% increase over last year’s viewership.

Thursday’s games with coach Hubert Davis and North Carolina facing Alabama scored a win with 11.1 million viewers, up over 10% from 2023.

On Friday, Kelvin Sampson’s Houston team versus Duke and Tennessee vs. Creighton had 10.6 million viewers. Those numbers were 15% more than last season in the late window of games on Friday.

What should be encouraging is that the tournament’s overall viewership is averaging 9.3 million viewers across CBS, TBS, truTV, and TNT.

Coming off a strong rookie year, STARRY®, a great-tasting soda bursting with lemon lime flavor that delivers the crisp, refreshing bite, is bringing a refreshing twist to basketball. The official soft drink of the NBA, WNBA, and NBA G League is teaming up with rapper and basketball fan Lil Durk to help fans unlock their on-the-court passion by bringing a different kind of basketball skills competition to college campuses with STARRY FIZZ FEST.

This spring, students across four HBCUs — Norfolk State University, Hampton University, Jackson State University and Morgan State University — will have a shot at more than $333,000 in scholarships and prizes, including a chance to secure an NIL deal traditionally reserved for student-athletes, giving a student a first-of-its-kind opportunity to become one of the new faces of STARRY. The winner will get an all-expenses paid trip to Kia NBA Tip-Off later this year. And like a true star with an NIL deal, their name, image and likeness will be featured on promotional materials for STARRY FIZZ FEST 2.0.

No stranger to holding his own in an arena, Lil Durk is showing students how any fan can have the skills to win and will be making a surprise campus appearance to check out the competition.

“Being competitive doesn’t just apply to sport, life itself is about hunger, drive and teamwork. This initiative is about rewarding students for their grind on and off the court, showing love and supporting our people while chasing their dreams,” Lil Durk said. For the stars off the court, STARRY is also partnering with the PepsiCo Foundation to unlock $80,000 in scholarships across the four universities. The PepsiCo Foundation will award $20,000 to one student at each university to go towards their education to help foster their long-term educational and professional growth. Eligible students can apply online.

“Our mission with STARRY FIZZ FEST is to bring the excitement to basketball fans that the brand is known for while rewarding HBCU students for their passion, amplifying their talent, and offering opportunities that positively impact these universities, their students and their communities,” Kent Montgomery, Senior Vice President, Industry Relations and Multicultural Development, PepsiCo said.

STARRY FIZZ FEST will tip off at Norfolk State University on March 29, followed by Hampton University on April 1, Jackson State University on April 20 and Morgan State University on April 26. Participating students will get the chance to play S-T-A-R-R-Y (a spin on the popular game of H-O-R-S-E), 3PT Knockout (a three-point shootout contest reflective of the STARRY NBA All-Star and HBCU Classic tailgate footprint), and Shaky Shot (inspired by the classic arcade game, with a moving backboard) to claim prizes like STARRY merch and gift cards. For the game of S-T-A-R-R-Y, students will have three minutes to earn six letters by successfully scoring specified shots around the court until a participant spells out S-T-A-R-R-Y where the fastest time on campus wins. One winner from each school will represent their campus at a final competition to showcase their skills and earn major bragging rights.
